THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE STUDENTS’ GRAMMAR MASTERY TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION SCORES AT STAIN PALANGKA RAYA

The principle purpose of this study is to identify problems as follows: Is there a correlation between the students’ grammar mastery towards the students’ translation scores at STAIN Palangka Raya? Does the students’ grammar mastery give significant contribution towards the students’ translation scores at STAIN Palangka Raya? Because of that, the purposes of this study are: To know the correlation between the students’ grammar mastery towards the students’ translation scores; To find the contribution of students’ grammar mastery towards the students’ translation scores at STAIN Palangka Raya.
In this study, the writer used the descriptive correlation method, with Pearson Product Moment correlation technique and simple linear regression to analyze its data. Its data were collected using test as its research instrument. Before conducting test, the instrument was tried out. It was determined its reliability and validity by Product Moment correlation.
The samples of this study were seventh semester students at English Education Study Program, STAIN Palangka Raya, consist of thirty eight students were taken by using cluster sampling technique.
The main researh findings were:
1.The correlation coefficient between both variables was 0.831. It meant that correlation coefficient of 0.831 was positive and very strong correlation. While in txy significance test is 8.963 with the degree of significance 5% is 2.201 could be used to reject the null hypothesis because txy > ttable = 8.963 > 2.201. In other words, the alternative hypothesis that saying there is significant positive correlation between the students’ grammar mastery towards the students’ translation scores was accepted.
2.The regression equation of Ŷ = 42.631 + 0.416X shown that the increasing or decreasing score of translation could be predicted by the score of grammar mastery. If X went up by one, Y was predicted to go up by 0.416. The contribution between grammar mastery towards translation score was high with its deteminant coefficient 61% and its residual 39% was determined by other variables. It could be concluded that the students’ grammar mastery gave significant contribution towards the students’ translation score.
