THE EFFECT OF STORYTELLINGTECHNIQUE ON SPEAKING FLUENCY OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA 1 KUALA KURUN



This study is aimed to measure the effect of Storytelling Technique in increasing the eleventh-grade students speaking fluency at Senior High School of 1 Kuala Kurun. In this study, the researcher used pre-experimental design, where the researcher used nonrandomized, post-test design with a kind of treatment. In this study, the researcher was helped by the English teacher of Senior High School 1 Kuala Kurun as the second tester for pre-test and post-test. There wereone group in this study, experiment group (eleventh Science program 1) which consist of 24 students. The researcher taught the students used of storytelling technique was applied on experiment group. To examine the hypothesis, the researcher used t-test formula. In addition, the researcher used SPSS 17.0 program to compare the data.
The result of t test using manual calculation showed that the calculated value (tobserved) was greater than ttableat 5% and 1% significance level or 2.07 < 13.576 > 2.82. The result of t-test using SPSS 17.0 calculation indicated that the calculated value (tobserved) was also greater than ttable at 5% and 1% significance level or2.07 < 14.798> 2.82. This indicated that the alternative hypothesis stating that the Storytelling Technique increases the students’ English speaking fluency for the eleventh-grade students at Senior High School of 1 Kuala Kurun was accepted and the null hypothesis stating that the Storytelling Technique does not increases the students’ English speaking fluency for the eleventh-grade students at Senior High School of 1 Kuala Kurun was rejected.
Based on the results of the study, it was shown that the storytelling Technique gives beneficial contribution in increasing the students’ speaking fluency and students’ speaking performance during the instructional process. Storytelling Technique implemented in this study consists of some steps. Those are; 1) deciding on the school syllabus and material,2)preparing the material to tell, 3) applied the storytelling technique 4) the students paid attention when doing the storytelling 5) the students prepared their story before speaking in front of class, 6) the student told the story in front class.
