This study is aimed to know how Role Playing Technique gave effect toward the eleventh grade students’ speaking ability at SMAN-1 DanauSembuluh.
The design of this study was quantitative research and the research type of this study was quasi-experimental design, the writer used quasi-experimental design, where the writer used nonrandomized control group pre-test, post-test design with a kind of treatment. The population of this study were all of students in eleventh grade students were 85 students. There were two groups in this study, control group (XI Sosial Studies) consist of 26 and experiment group (XI Science) consist of 29 students. In this experiment, the writer taught the students directly with the same material. Therefore, the use of role playing method was applied on experiment group only, and for the control group the writer applied conventional method. Meanwhile, the control group was not given the treatment. To examine the hypothesis, the writer used t-test formula as follows:t_o= (M1-M2)/〖SE〗_(m1-m2) . In addition, the writer used SPSS 18.0 program to compare the data.
The result of t test using manual calculation showed that the calculated value (tobserved) was greater than ttableat 5% and lower at 1% significance level or 2.000 2.660. The result of t-test using SPSS 18.0 calculation found the calculated value (tobserved) was also greater than ttable at 1% and 5% significance level or 2.000 2.660. This indicated that the alternative hypothesis stating that the RPT gives effect toward the eleventh grade students at SMAN-1 DanauSembuluhwas accepted and the null hypothesis stating that the RPT does not gave effect toward the eleventh grade students at SMAN-1 DanauSembuluhwas rejected.
Based on the results finding of the study, it was shown that the RPT gives beneficial contribution in improving the students’ speaking ability during the instructional process. it is also expected to be good information for many teacher especialy English teacher in teaching speaking used role playing technique.
