THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PICTURE CHARTS IN IMPROVING VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT AT THE FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS OF MIN LANGKAI PALANGKA RAYA



This study is intended to know whether the students at the class IVA at MIN Langkai Palangka Raya taught by using picture chart media gain better scores in vocabulary than taught by non picture media. The objective of this study is to measure the effectiveness of picture chart media in improving the students’ English vocabulary at the class IVA at MIN Langkai Palangka Raya.
In this study, the writer applied quantitative approach in collecting the data and the instruments of the study was test. The sample of study is determined using cluster sampling technique. In this way, the writer only chooses one class which will be related to this study. Therefore, Class of IVA is chosen than IVB, IVC about 38 students. The validity is used content validity and constructs validity and the formula KR-20 is used to measure the reliability of the test. The data were analyze using t-test.
The result of data analysis showed the result of this study. Before conducting the treatment, the average score of students was 55.97 there were ten students who passed the test or about 26.31% in percentage and there were twenty eight students who failed the test or about 73.69% in percentage. After conducting the treatment, there were significant effects. The average score of students was 73.16, there were thirty two students who passed the test or about 84.21% in percentage and there were six students who failed the test or about 15.79% in percentage. Based on this analysis, it could be said that teaching vocabulary by using picture media gives significant improvement toward students’ vocabulary. The result can be seen on the statistical calculation, in which: to = 15.036. Then, it was consulted with ttable ( tt ) which db or df = N-1 or df = 38-1. Significant level 5% at ttable was ( tt ) = 2.021 and significant level 1% was ( tt ) = 2.704 . So, 2.021 < 15.036 > 2.704. It meant t0 was higher than tt. So, the use of picture as teaching media gives significant effect toward the improvement of students’ vocabulary.
Based on the result of data analysis from vocabulary scores which gained by students before and after conducting treatment, there were significantly different (tobserved = 6.830 > ttable = 2.021 at 5% level of significance). This indicated that teaching vocabulary by using picture media gives significant effect toward the students’ vocabulary. It implicated, if the students were taught vocabulary by using picture media therefore, the students’ vocabulary score would be better than without using picture media.
