USING LANGUAGE LABORATORY IN TEACHING LISTENING COMPREHENSION I AT STAIN PALANGKARAYA
The principle purpose of the study were; to describe the teaching and learning process of listening Comprehension I in language laboratory at STAIN Palangka Raya and the lecturer’s problems in using it.
The study used qualitative approach with descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the writer used some techniques namely, (1) Observation, (2) Interview, and (3) Field-note. In analyzing the data, the writer used some techniques namely, (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data display, and (4) conclusion drawing/verification. The subjects of the study were two lecturers of English study program of STAIN Palangka Raya academic year 2012/2013 who teaches Listening Comprehension I.
The result of the study, were as follows:
1. The teaching and learning process of listening Comprehension I in language laboratory at STAIN Palangka Raya did by the lecturers were three activities, such as; (1) pre-listening activities include: greeting students, checking the presence list, preparing the medium, motivating students, and building context, the students looking at pictures, discussion of the topic/ situation, a question and answer session, and following the instruction for the while listening activity, (2) while- listening activities include organize activities be
interesting, and give an immediate feedback whenever possible, and helping students. (3) post- listening activities include: checking the student’s answers, design comprehension tasks,reinforce grammar, summarizing, explaining the teaching learning process for the next meeting, giving advices and motivation, and also greeting the students. In all of activities, the lecturers used media in language laboratory to support the teaching process. And it made the lecturers be more creative by using some methods and strategies in their teaching 2. The writer found six lecturers’ problems such as : ineffective media or drills of language laboratory, boring class, students’ attention, noise, electric, andstudents had less competent in using lab’s facilities.
In conclusion, the language laboratory is very helpful tool in teaching and learning of listening Comprehension I. Although the writer found the lecturers’ problem in using it. And the writer suggested that the lecturers and students can use lab facilities appropriately.
