THE EFFECT OF USING CONCEPT MAPPING IN WRITING RECOUNT PARAGRAPH TOWARD STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY AT THE TENTH YEAR OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 TUMBANG SAMBA KATINGAN TENGAH



The study was aimed at measuring the effect of using Concept Mapping in writing recount paragraph toward students’ writing ability at the tenth year of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Tumbang Samba Katingan Tengah. The type of the study was Quasi-Experimental, especially non-randomized control group, pre-test and post-test; the design of the study was quantitative approach to find out the problem of the study. The problem of the study was “Are the students taught by Concept Mapping get better writing achievement than those taught by non Concept Mapping?”.
There were two classes becoming sample of the study, they were class X A as the experiment group and X B as the control group, and the total number was 53 students. Both of groups were given a pre-test to gain the first students’ writing score. After gaining the pretest score, the students in the experimental group were taught using Concept Mapping in writing recount paragraph and the students in the control group were taught by non Concept Mapping. After that, the writer gave a post-test to the both experimental and control group to gain the students’ final score.
The writer analyzed the data using t-test calculation with manual and also SPSS 19 program to test the hypothesis. The result of the analysis using manual calculation was 3.389 and ttable was 2.00758 it meant tobserveb > ttable. The result of calculation using SPSS 19 program was found tobserved (3.106) was higher than ttable (2, 00758). It could be concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) stating that the students taught Concept Mapping have better writing achievement than those taught by non Concept Mapping was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) stating that the students taught by Concept Mapping do not have better writing achievement than those taught by non Concept Mapping was rejected. It is proved by the value of tobserveb that was higher than ttable , either at 5% significance level or at 1% significance level (2.00758 2.7572). It meant that teaching writing using Concept Mapping gave significant effect on the students’ writingability of the tenth year students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Tumbang Samba Katingan Tengah.
